Clouds have the wonderful ability to be simultaneously abstract and concrete. Depending upon the level of magnification and the imagination of the viewer, a cloud's identity can flow between a recognizable object, an ambiguous smudge, or the millions of separate and distinct molecules that form it. Similarly, only someones previous knowledge will let them identify a foreign character or word as a representation of a sound or thought instead of simply a few stray marks. This thin area between the ambiguous and the well-defined is where I set my work and the elements within it. These paintings explore the point at which a viewer decides “this is representational” or “this is abstract” and what causes them to make that choice.
